30 Dec. 1817–5 Mar. 1886. Farmer, military officer, hotelier. Born in Madison, Geauga Co., Ohio. Son of Chancey Loveland and Nancy. Moved to Perry, Geauga Co., by 1820. Returned to Madison, by 1830. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, June 1837. Married Amy Call, 16 Feb. 1838, in Geauga Co. Moved to Lorain Co., Ohio, ca. 1838. Moved to Carthage, Hancock Co., Illinois, 1840. Lived near Warsaw, Hancock Co., 1844. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., fall 1845. Appointed captain of Nauvoo Legion, ca. 1845. Ordained a seventy, by 3 Jan. 1846. Settled on Mosquito Creek, near what became Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa, 1846. Helped build Fort Kearney near present-day Kearney, Buffalo Co., Nebraska, 1849. Moved to Bountiful, Davis Co., Utah Territory, 1850. Appointed lieutenant colonel of territorial militia by Brigham Young, 1853; later appointed colonel by Governor Alfred Cumming. Served in and later presided over colonizing mission to Carson Valley, Carson Co., Utah Territory (later in Nevada), 1855. Elected justice of the peace, Aug. 1856. Appointed probate judge for Carson Co., by Nov. 1856. Moved to Call’s Fort, Box Elder Co., Utah Territory, 1860. Moved to Brigham City, Box Elder Co., 1865. Elected first mayor of Brigham City, 1867. Served as assessor and collector for Box Elder Co. Died at Call’s Fort.
