Biography

7 May 1811–24 Apr. 1871. Farmer, miner, stonemason. Born in Breconside, Farlam, Cumberland, England. Son of William Maughan and Martha Wilson. Married first Ruth Harrison, 1 Oct. 1831, in Alston, Cumberland. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Isaac Russell, 1838. Ordained an elder, 6 Feb. 1841, in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. Immigrated to U.S.; arrived in New York City, 20 May 1841. Arrived in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, 1 July 1841. Married second Mary A. Davis, 30 Oct. 1841, in Hancock Co. Sent to find coal on Mississippi and Rock rivers, spring 1844. Moved to Rock Island, Rock Island Co., Illinois, Aug. 1844. Moved to Mineral Point, Iowa Co., Wisconsin Territory, 1846. Arrived in Salt Lake Valley, 17 Sept. 1850. Served colonizing mission to Tooele, Tooele Co., Utah Territory, beginning Sept. 1850. Appointed Tooele Co. clerk, assessor, and city recorder, Apr. 1851. Served as presiding elder in E. T. City (later Lake Point), Tooele Co., Oct. 1854. Left to serve colonizing mission to Cache Valley and helped settle Maughan’s Fort (later Wellsville), Cache Co., Utah Territory, Sept. 1856. Served in Utah territorial legislature, 1856–1857. Elected Cache Co. probate judge, 4 Apr. 1857. Served as presiding bishop, 1856. Appointed stake president, 27 Nov. 1859. Died in Logan, Cache Co.
