16 Mar. 1798–14 Apr. 1856. Minister, blacksmith. Born at Cayuga Co., New York. Son of Robert Rathbun and Anna Allen. Moved to Wayne Co., Ohio, by 1817. Married first Hannah Warner, 1817, in Wayne Co. Moved to Mantua, Portage Co., Ohio, 1828. Baptist minister at Mantua, 1830, when Latter-day Saint missionaries to unorganized Indian Territory preached at his house. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by 1831. Served mission in Ohio, 1831. Among first Latter-day Saints to migrate to Independence, Jackson Co., Missouri. His blacksmith shop ransacked by vigilantes, 20 July 1833. Driven out of Jackson Co. into Clay Co., Missouri, Nov. 1833. Member of the Seventy, 1836. Ordained a high priest, by 5 Nov. 1837. Lived at Hawn’s Mill, Caldwell Co., Missouri, at time of massacre, in which his son Hiram Rathbun was wounded, 30 Oct. 1838. Married second Rowena Chapel, 28 Apr. 1839, in Pike Co., Missouri. Married third Letitia, by June 1850. Moved to Village, Van Buren Co., Iowa, by June 1850. Died in Van Buren Co.
