Angell, Truman Osborn

Biography

5 June 1810–16 Oct. 1887. Carpenter, joiner, architect, farmer. Born at North Providence, Providence Co., Rhode Island. Son of James W. Angell and Phebe Morton. Joined Freewill Baptist Church, ca. 1829. Married Polly Johnson of Genesee Co., New York, 7 Oct. 1832. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jan. 1833, and ordained an elder five weeks later. Served mission with Joseph Holbrook to New York and Massachusetts, spring 1833. Moved to Lima, Livingston Co., New York, July 1833. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, fall 1835. Labored on Kirtland temple. Appointed member of Second Quorum of the Seventy, 1836. Stockholder in Kirtland Safety Society. Moved to Missouri, spring 1838; to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, winter 1838–1839; and to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, 1841. Directed joiner work of Nauvoo temple under architect William Weeks. Migrated with family to Salt Lake Valley, 1848. Served as architect for church, ca. 1848–1861. Began work on Salt Lake temple, 1853. Served mission to Europe to study architecture and preach, 1856. Again appointed church architect, 1867. Served as president of Fourteenth Quorum of the Seventy in Salt Lake City. Ordained a high priest and a patriarch, Feb. 1884. Died at Salt Lake City.
