Rollosson, William H.

Biography

8 Jan. 1820–9 Oct. 1864. Merchant, politician, military officer. Born in Williamsburg, James City and York counties, Virginia. Attended Williams College, 1837–1839, in Williamstown, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, ca. 1840. Partnered with John M. Finch in grocery firm of Finch & Rollosson, 1841–1844, in Nauvoo; firm left Nauvoo, ca. June 1844, and opened stores in Pontoosuc, Appanoose, and La Harpe, in Hancock Co. Helped found what became Dallas City, Hancock Co., ca. 1846, and served as alderman. Continued grocery business with Finch in Dallas City; also traded grain and cattle and operated a packing house, flour mill, and distillery. Married Marietta Bostwick, 1 Feb. 1855, in Hancock Co. Moved to Pontoosuc, by 1855. Appointed inspector general of Illinois state militia, 1858. Represented Hancock Co. in Illinois House of Representatives, 1860–1862. Elected mayor of Dallas City, 1862. Worshipful Master of Dallas City Masonic Lodge. Died in Dallas City.
