Marcy, William Learned

12 Dec. 1786–4 July 1857. Lawyer, politician. Born at Sturbridge (later Southbridge), Worcester Co., Massachusetts. Son of Jedediah Marcy and Ruth Larned. Moved to Woodstock, Windham Co., Connecticut, 1804; to Newport, Newport Co., Rhode Island, 1805; to Providence, Providence Co., Rhode Island, 1806; and to Troy, Rensselaer Co., New York, 1808. Married Dolly Newell, 27 Sept. 1812, at Sturbridge. Enlisted in New York militia, 1812. Served in War of 1812, 1812–1815. Served as Troy city recorder, 1816–1818, 1821–1823. Served as adjutant general of New York, 1821–1823, at Troy. Moved to Albany, Albany Co., New York, and served as state comptroller, 1823–1829. Married Cornelia Knower, 29 Apr. 1824, at Guilderland, Albany Co. Served as state supreme court justice, 1829–1831, at Albany; as U.S. senator and chairman of committee on judiciary, 1831–1833, at Washington DC; and as governor of New York, 1833–1838, at Albany. Served as U.S. secretary of war, 1845–1849, and as U.S. secretary of state, 1853–1857, at Washington DC. Died at Ballston Spa, Saratoga Co., New York.
