Summary

Originally inhabited by native Algonquin tribes. Among first thirteen colonies that formed U.S., southernmost state in New England bordered on north by Massachusetts and on east by Rhode Island. First European permanent residents to establish settlements were from Massachusetts Bay colonists, ca. 1635. Population in 1820 about 275,00. Population in 1830 about 300,000. JS corresponded with Horace Hotchkiss and Smith Tuttle in Connecticut regarding debts for land sold to church in Nauvoo area.
