JS’s Friends Visit Governor Ford

9–20 December 1842

William Clayton, Willard Richards, and others traveled from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Springfield, Illinois, and met with Justin Butterfield in unsuccessful effort to discharge JS’s debts through bankruptcy. Party also met with Illinois Supreme Court justice Stephen A. Douglas and newly elected governor Thomas Ford to discuss dismissing outstanding warrant for JS’s arrest, Springfield.
