Biography

29 May 1781–28 Nov. 1869. Carpenter, scribe, sawmill operator, blacksmith. Born at Cambridge, Albany Co., New York. Son of Nathan Harris and Rhoda Lapham. Moved with parents to area of Swift’s Landing (later in Palmyra), Ontario Co., New York, 1793. Married first Roxana Peas, 22 July 1802. Moved to Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania. Divorced wife, 1818. Married second Deborah Lott, 16 Jan. 1819. Wife died, 1825. Married third Parna Chapell, 29 Mar. 1826. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Hyrum Smith and Newel Knight, 10 Feb. 1831, while living near Windham, Luzerne Co. Ordained an elder, by June 1831. Moved to Brownhelm, Lorain Co., Ohio, summer 1831. Ordained a high priest by Oliver Cowdery, 25 Oct. 1831, in Orange, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio. Appointed scribe for JS, 27 Oct. 1831. Served mission to Pennsylvania and New York, 1832–1833. Moved to Florence, Huron Co., Ohio, Dec. 1833. Labored on temple in Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1835. Moved near Kirtland, spring 1836. Migrated to Missouri, Oct. 1838. Expelled from Missouri; relocated at Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, 1838. Settled at Commerce (later Nauvoo), Hancock Co., Illinois, 1839. Labored on Nauvoo temple. Member of Nauvoo Legion. Moved to Pottawattamie Co., Iowa Territory, fall 1846. Migrated to Utah Territory, 1852, and settled in Ogden, Weber Co. Moved to Provo, Utah Co., Utah Territory, by Oct. 1853. Ordained a patriarch, 8 Oct. 1853. Appointed to preside over high priests in Provo, 2 Sept. 1855. Moved to southern Utah Territory, 1862. Returned to northern Utah Territory, 1867. Died at Logan, Cache Co., Utah Territory.
