Mackenzie, Alexander

6 Apr. 1803–13 Sept. 1848. Author, naval officer. Born in New York City. Son of John Slidell and Margery Mackenzie. Joined U.S. Navy as midshipman, ca. 1815; promoted to lieutenant, 1825, and to commander, 1841. Wrote several books based on his travels as a naval officer. Married Catherine Alexander Robinson, 1 Oct. 1835, in New York City. Changed surname from Slidell to Mackenzie, 1837, to honor wishes of maternal uncle. As commander of U.S. ship Somers, uncovered a mutiny plot and hanged two of its organizers, 1842. Moved to Mount Pleasant, Westchester Co., New York, after 1835. Died near Tarrytown, Westchester Co.
