Biography

29 Feb. 1784–10 June 1864. Stonemason. Born in Plainfield, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire. Son of Knight Cutler and Elizabeth Boyd. Married Lois Lathrop, 17 Nov. 1808, in Lebanon, Grafton Co., New Hampshire. Moved to Upper Lisle, Broome Co., New York, ca. 1808. Served in War of 1812. Moved to Chautauque Co., New York, after 1814, and settled in Hanover, Chautauque Co., by 1830. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by David W. Patten, 20 Jan. 1833, in Chautauque Co. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1834. Ordained an elder, by Aug. 1834. Labored on Kirtland temple. Member of Kirtland high council, 1835. Ordained a high priest by JS, 29 Apr. 1836, in Kirtland. Moved near Richmond, Ray Co., Missouri, 1836; to Caldwell Co., Missouri, 1838; and to Commerce (later Nauvoo), Hancock Co., Illinois, by summer 1839. Member of Nauvoo high council, 1839–1846. Appointed member of Nauvoo temple building committee, 1840, in Nauvoo. Appointed guard in Nauvoo Legion, Mar. 1841. Served mission to Wisconsin Territory, 1841–1842, to obtain lumber for construction of Nauvoo temple. Member of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge. Admitted to Council of Fifty, 11 Mar. 1844. Elected president of town of Nauvoo, Apr. 1845. Led third company of Latter-day Saints to leave Nauvoo and chose site of Winter Quarters, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska), for the Saints, 1846. Established town of Manti (later near Shenandoah), Fremont Co., Iowa, 1850. Excommunicated, 20 Apr. 1851. Established Church of Jesus Christ (Cutlerite), 19 Sept. 1853, in Fremont Co. Lived at Fisher, Fremont Co., 1860. Died in Manti.
