Biography

5 Oct. 1812–27 Nov. 1850. Farmer, policeman. Born in Farmington, Kennebec Co., Maine. Son of Josiah Tufts and Lydia Merritt. Moved to Sebec, Penobscot Co., Maine, before 1835. Married Elmira Pinkham, 30 Sept. 1835, in Farmington. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, before June 1840. Moved to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, by June 1840. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, after 19 Feb. 1843. Lived in Nauvoo Fourth Ward, 1843. Served as policeman in Nauvoo, 1843–1845. Ordained a seventy, 8 Oct. 1844, at Nauvoo. Appointed president of Fifteenth Quorum of the Seventy, 12 Jan. 1845. Moved to St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., Missouri, July 1846. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, summer 1848. Died in Salt Lake City.
