Married first Alice (Elsa) Johnson, daughter of John Johnson and Alice (Elsa) Jacobs, 14 Sept. 1820, at Hiram, Portage Co., Ohio. President of Kirtland teachers quorum, 1836. Ordained a seventy by Hazen Aldrich, 20 Dec. 1836, at Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio. Driven out of De Witt, Carroll Co., Missouri, into Caldwell Co., Missouri, 1838. Wife died, 1841. Excommunicated, 1842, at Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois. Printed anti-Mormon tract titled The Absurdities of Mormonism Portrayed, spring 1843. Married second Phebe Wheeler, 19 Oct. 1843, at Nauvoo. In St. Louis, published exposé on polygamy titled Spiritual Wifery at Nauvoo Exposed, 1845.
