Inheritance

Summary

Generally referred to land promised by or received from God for the church and its members. A January 1831 revelation promised church members a land of inheritance. In March and May 1831, JS dictated revelations commanding members “to purchase lands for an inheritance” in the “western countries,” which would become the New Jerusalem. A 20 July 1831 revelation designated Missouri as the “land of promise” and Independence as the “centre place” for the city of Zion. The church was to purchase land in the area, and the bishop was to divide the land for the Saints, for “an everlasting inheritance.” Church members who were relocating to Zion and had proved faithful in their stewardships were to obtain a certificate from local church leaders to receive an inheritance in Zion; the church was to keep a record of those who obtained inheritances.
