Summary
To designate for a particular purpose or calling; also, to bestow authority for a specific assignment or responsibility, usually through the laying on of hands by one with priesthood authority; sometimes used interchangeably with “ordain.” For example, an 11 November 1831 revelation required prospective bishops selected from the high priesthood to be set apart to administer to the church’s temporal needs. In February 1835, newly ordained apostles and seventies were set apart for the specific task of preaching the gospel. Church members were similarly set apart for church callings, priesthood offices, and missionary service. See also “.”
