5 Nov. 1797–29 Dec. 1867. Farmer. Born in Madison Co., Kentucky. Son of John Groves and Mary Hurd. Moved to Indiana, 1819. Married first Sarah Hogue, ca. 1825, in Indiana. Member of Presbyterian church. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Calvin Beebe, 1 Mar. 1832, in Greene Co., Indiana; ordained an elder by Peter Dustin and Calvin Beebe shortly after in Greene Co. Divorced wife, by 1833. Moved to Jackson Co., Missouri, 1833. Served mission to Illinois, 1833–1834. Joined Camp of Israel expedition at Salt River, Monroe Co., Missouri, 1834. Ordained a high priest, 10 Sept. 1834, in Clay Co., Missouri. Served mission to Illinois, 1834. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1835. Labored on Kirtland temple. Served mission in Ohio, 1835. Appointed to Missouri high council, 1836, in Kirtland. Married second Lucy Simmons, 19 Jan. 1836, in Kirtland. Moved to Clay Co., 1836. Served mission to Kentucky to raise funds for church purchase of lands, 1836. Moved to what became Caldwell Co., Missouri, 1836. Served mission to Ohio to raise funds for construction of temple at Far West, Caldwell Co., 1836–1837. Moved to Daviess Co., Missouri, by spring 1838. Moved to Caldwell Co., Nov. 1838.
