Biography

25 Mar. 1806–22 Feb. 1880. Farmer, carpenter, lawyer, realtor. Born at Tyringham, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts. Son of Chileab Smith and Nancy Marshall. Moved to Amherst, Lorain Co., Ohio, ca. 1815. Married Elizabeth Frank, 27 Dec. 1827, likely in Chautauque Co., New York. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and ordained an elder, by June 1831. Ordained a high priest by Oliver Cowdery, 25 Oct. 1831. Served mission to New England with Gideon Carter, 1832. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, by 1834. Member of Kirtland high council, 1834. Participated in Camp of Israel expedition to Missouri, 1834. Tried by Kirtland high council for making false charges against JS, confessed, and retained his membership, 1834. Appointed a president of First Quorum of the Seventy, 1835. Temporary scribe to JS during illness of Warren F. Parrish, 1836. Left church, by 1838. Moved to Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa, 1853. Served as Pottawattamie Co. school fund commissioner and justice of the peace. Died at Council Bluffs.
