Church of Christ

Summary

The Book of Mormon related that when Christ set up his church in the Americas, “they which were baptized in the name of Jesus, were called the church of Christ.” The first name used to denote the church JS organized on 6 April 1830 was “the Church of Christ.” At a 3 May 1834 conference, church leaders approved changing the name to “The Church of the Latter Day Saints.” A revelation dated 26 April 1838 incorporated both previous official names: “For thus shall my Church be called in the Last days even the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.” Usage during JS’s lifetime varied.
