Biography
10 Apr. 1801–12 Aug. 1871. Mechanic, gunsmith, brewer, farmer, blacksmith, gristmill operator. Born at Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. Son of William Turley and Elizabeth Yates. Associated with Methodism, by 1818. Married Frances Amelia Kimberley, 26 Nov. 1821, at Harborne, Staffordshire, England. Migrated to Upper Canada, 1825. Purchased land at Churchville, Chinguacousy Township, York Co. (later in Ontario), Upper Canada, 1834. Baptized into LDS church by Isaac Russell, 1 Mar. 1837, at Churchville. Ordained a priest, 24 Apr. 1837, in Churchville. Migrated from Upper Canada to Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, in Almon W. Babbitt company, July 1838. Member of Far West high council. Ordained a seventy by Heber C. Kimball, 22 Dec. 1838, in Far West. Appointed member of committee on removal from Missouri under Brigham Young, 29 Jan. 1839. Moved to Adams Co., Illinois, by May 1839. Accompanied Quorum of the Twelve on mission to Great Britain, 1839–1840. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, by 1841. Member of Nauvoo Legion, 1841. Member of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge. Ordained a high priest by George Miller, 24 Sept. 1843, in Nauvoo. Participated in plural marriage during JS’s lifetime. Admitted to Council of Fifty, 1 Mar. 1845. Elected trustee of town of Nauvoo, Apr. 1845. Left Nauvoo during exodus, Feb. 1846. Moved to Winter Quarters, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska), by Nov. 1846. Member of Winter Quarters high council, 28 Nov. 1846. Arrived in Salt Lake Valley, 1849. Served colonizing mission to San Bernardino, Los Angeles Co., California, 1851. Appointed school commissioner, before 1853. Elected San Bernardino city treasurer, 1854. Appointed president of high council, 15 Mar. 1856. Returned to Utah Territory, 1857/1858. Moved to Washington, Washington Co., Utah Territory, by Dec. 1859. Died at Beaver, Beaver Co., Utah Territory.
