Biography

1805–23 Dec. 1888. Printer, publisher, bookbinder, bookseller. Born in Milford, New Haven Co., Connecticut. Moved to Albany and then to Rochester, Monroe Co., New York. Member of Rochester Union Grays militia. Possibly worked for E. B. Grandin, who printed first edition of Book of Mormon, ca. 1829, in Palmyra, Wayne Co., New York. Moved to Cleveland, ca. 1829. Married Nancy Maria Hayward, ca. 9 Feb. 1833, in Cuyahoga Co., Ohio. Operated print shop, 1834–1863, in Cleveland. Printed first Cleveland city directory, 1837. Named assistant chief of Cleveland volunteer fire department, 1840; made chief of department, 1845. Appointed general of Cleveland Grays militia, 1847. Among incorporators of St. Clair Street Railroad Company, 1863. Died in Cleveland.
