Biography

7 Oct. 1788–7 Oct. 1874. Farmer. Born in White Creek, Washington Co., New York. Son of James Lake Sr. and Margaret Hegeman (Hegerman). Moved to Ernestown, Midland District (later in Lennox and Addington Co., Ontario), Upper Canada, ca. 1793. Married first Mary Lake, 1809, likely in Ernestown; wife died, 1816. Married second Elizabeth Stover, 1816, likely in Ernestown; wife died, 1823. Married third Philomela Smith, 3 Sept. 1823. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Eleazer Miller, July 1832, in Ernestown. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, July 1833. Ordained an elder, 8 Mar. 1835, in Kirtland. Assisted in construction of Kirtland temple. Resided in Morgan Co. (later in Scott Co.), Illinois, 1838–1844. Moved to farm fifteen miles from Carthage, Hancock Co., Illinois, early 1844. Assisted in construction of Nauvoo temple and Nauvoo House. Moved to what became Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa, 1846. Moved to Holt Co., Missouri, spring 1848. Moved to Ogden, Weber Co., Utah Territory, 1850. Ordained a high priest, 1851. Appointed member of first high council in Weber stake, 26 Jan. 1851, in Ogden. Ordained patriarch in Weber stake, 8 Oct. 1853, in Ogden. Moved to Lynn, Weber Co., by 1870. Moved to Oxford, Oneida Co., Idaho Territory, summer 1872. Wife died, 20 Mar. 1873, in Oxford. Died in Oxford.
