Slocum, John Jay

Biography

25 May 1803–12 May 1863. Clergyman, publisher, college and newspaper founder. Born in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co., New York. Son of John Slocum and Phebe Slade. Attended Andover, Yale, and Princeton theological seminaries. Ordained a Presbyterian minister, 1834. Ministerial duties took him throughout midwestern and northeastern U.S. Credited with naming town of Lake Forest, Lake Co., Illinois, mid 1850s. Cofounded Lake Forest College. Moved to Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, by 1857. Moved to New York City, by 1860, and founded religious newspaper New York World. Moved to Lansing, Ingham Co., Michigan. Died at Lansing.
