Biography
24 July 1804–20 Mar. 1876. Farmer, carpenter, millwright. Born in Markham, York Co., Upper Canada. Son of Matthew Mills and Hannah. Married Jane Sanford, 13 Mar. 1827, at Markham. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by John Taylor, Feb. 1837. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, Feb. 1838; to Missouri, Sept. 1838; and to Nashville, Lee Co., Iowa Territory, 1839. Purchased lot in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, summer 1841. Member of Eighth Quorum of the Seventy. Carved horns and ears for oxen in baptismal font of Nauvoo temple, Jan. 1846. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, arriving by Oct. 1850. Settled in Provo, Utah Co., Utah Territory, 1852. Owned various sawmills and grist mills. Helped build temple in St. George, Washington Co., Utah Territory, winter 1874–1875. Died in Provo.
