Biography

19 Jan. 1804–16 June 1876. Lawyer, postmaster, editor. Born in Becket, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts. Son of Nathan Birchard and Marcy Ashley. Moved to Windham, Portage Co., Ohio, 1812. Admitted to Ohio bar, 1817. Moved to Warren, Trumbull Co., Ohio, 1822. Served as Warren postmaster, 1829. Served as judge of Trumbull Co. Court of Common Pleas, 1833–1836. Served as solicitor in general land office, 1836–1839, in Washington DC. Served as solicitor of U.S. treasury, ca. 1839–1841. Married Jane Elizabeth Weaver, 7 Aug. 1841, in Bellavista, Prince William Co., Virginia. Served as justice of Ohio Supreme Court, 1842–1849. Elected to board of directors of Warren public school system and served as board’s first president, beginning 30 Apr. 1849. Elected as representative to Ohio general assembly, 1853. Died at Warren.
