Appleby, William Ivins

Biography

13 Aug. 1811–20 May 1870. Carpenter, millwright, schoolteacher, justice of the peace, judge, town clerk. Born near New Egypt, Monmouth Co., New Jersey. Son of Jacob Appleby and Mary Lukers. Married Sarah B. Price, 23 Oct. 1830, in Monmouth Co. Appointed justice of the peace and associate judge for Burlington Co., New Jersey, 1838. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Erastus Snow, 21 Sept. 1840, in New Jersey. Ordained a high priest, 1844. Served missions in eastern U.S., beginning 1840. Presided over church branch in Recklesstown Township, Burlington Co., New Jersey. Served as president of eastern U.S. mission, 1847, 1856–1858. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley; arrived, Oct. 1849. Served as a regent of University of Deseret. Served as clerk of Supreme and First District courts for Utah Territory. Died in Salt Lake City.
