Summary

Post township on west end of Long Island. Separated from Staten Island by the Narrows. Located about ten miles south of New York City. Population in 1840 about 1,300. Population in 1854 about 2,100. Residence of James Arlington Bennet, who corresponded with JS, 1842–1843, located in township.
