Summary

Town situated on both sides of Illinois River near mouth of Fox River. Located about ninety miles southwest of Chicago. Founded 1830. County seat. Population in 1843 about 500. Population in 1850 about 2,800. William O. Clark organized branch of church in town, 23 Mar. 1844.
