Summary

Metropolis in Russia situated on Neva River near Gulf of Finland about 350 miles northwest of Moscow. City stands partly on mainland and partly on group of river islands. Founded by Peter the Great, 1703. Seat of Russian empire transferred from Moscow to Saint Petersburg, 1700s. Population in 1827 about 300,000. Population in 1838 about 585,000. JS appointed George J. Adams to join Orson Hyde on mission to Saint Petersburg, ca. 1 June 1843.
