A grand council before the foundation of the earth is discussed in JS’s translation of papyri that he said contained writings of the Old Testament patriarch Abraham. Although JS apparently started work on this translation in 1835, he was still working on it as late as 1842, when it was published. (“The Book of Abraham,” Times and Seasons, 15 Mar. 1842, 3:720 [Abraham 3:22–26]; Historical Introduction to Book of Abraham Manuscript, ca. Early July–ca. Nov. 1835–A [Abraham 1:4–2:6]; JS, Journal, 8–9 Mar. 1842.)
