Nauvoo City Council Meeting, 13 April 1844

Calendar of Documents
The following is a calendar of documents known to be related to this meeting of the city council. In cases where there are multiple versions of documents, particularly city ordinances, all versions are listed here, with links to versions that are extant. Documents are listed on this calendar only when there is evidence that a separate document was created. Because it is not clear that parliamentary procedure was consistently followed in city council meetings, mere mention of a motion in the minutes is not sufficient evidence that a separate document was created as a result. For more information, see Introduction to Nauvoo City Council Records.

1844 (6)

February (1)

Between 12 February and 13 April 1844

Committee on City Attorney, Bill, to Nauvoo City Council, Nauvoo, Hancock Co., IL
1

Bill for an ordinance on the duties of the city attorney. In February 1843, the city council had passed an ordinance concerning the duties of the city attorney. In December 1843, the office of city attorney had been abolished. Then at the 16 January 1844 City Council meeting, the mayor suggested the propriety of having a city attorney connected with the marshal. A special committee was appointed to act on the mayor’s proposal. The committee reported at the 12 February 1844 meeting that they had not had time to draft a bill. The minutes are somewhat ambiguous, but it appears that this bill read at the 13 April 1844 meeting is what was drafted by that special committee. The bill was discussed and referred to the committee of municipal laws. A new bill was presented at the 8 June 1844 council meeting and passed into an ordinance. (Ordinance, 25 Feb. 1843–A; Nauvoo City Council Rough Minute Book, Nov. 1842–Jan. 1844, 27, 46; Nauvoo City Council Rough Minute Book, Feb. 1844–Jan. 1845, 1, 8–10, 16; Ordinance, 8 June 1844.)

  • Between 12 Feb. and 13 Apr. 1844. Not extant.

Account for serving a writ of habeas corpus and holding a prisoner in custody. This account was presented at the 13 April 1844 City Council meeting. At the 29 April 1844 meeting this account and a claim from Theodore Turley were ordered to be laid over to the next council. Turley’s claim was allowed at the 8 June 1844, but Eldredge’s account is not mentioned further in the minutes. A notation on the verso of the account indicates that the municipal court issued an order for the account. (Nauvoo City Council Rough Minute Book, Feb. 1844–Jan. 1845, 8, 11, 14.)
