“Mr. Fare Play,” Poem, to JS, [, Hancock Co., IL], ca. late 1842; unidentified handwriting; twenty pages; JS Collection, CHL.
Or did they come out here to seek the Lord
And understand the misteres of his word
19 For what O saints did you come to the west
Was it to seek the Lord your souls to bless
Or was it to pursue the tatling trade
At which Im sure but little can be made
The tatlers are much worse than little frogs
And make more fuss than all the little dogs
The little dogs that bark in parlours gay
Where oft they do their wilde gambols <play>
20 O friends we ought to dwell in peace & <love>
And serve the Lord supreme who dwels above
Our prayers should up ascend to God supreme
And truth divine should be our greatest theme
We have no right a tatling tale to tell
But always should in peace together dwell
And all the great commands of God obey
And walk in peace along the narrow way
End of the first book [p. [8]]
