“Mr. Fare Play,” Poem, to JS, [, Hancock Co., IL], ca. late 1842; unidentified handwriting; twenty pages; JS Collection, CHL.
And men should wisely act and ever well
And saints a tatling tale should never tell
We should delight in God who is supreme
And truth aware should be our greatest <theme>
8 Like Beltashar who did live of old
May tatlers shiv’r if naught but with the <cold>
The tatlers who in fair reside
Who have the just and good so oft beli[e]d
They d better now break of their base emp<loy>
That God may not in anger them destroy
But all the saints who[’]ve learnd the <tatling trade>
Had better stop and give no further aid
9 What have our prophets done so very mean
That has by wicked men or saints been seen
What doctrins have they taught absurd <or vile>
That saints have not the powr to reconcile
With scriptures true that men revealed <of old>
Which prophets true to saints did then <unfold>
Bring up your arguments O tatlers low
And try your reasons fair to plainly show
10 We want all saints the word to understand
That it may bear with them its true command
I will the word insert Dont talk to me
This may sometimes be used where tatlers <be> [p. [11]]
