“Mr. Fare Play,” Poem, to JS, [, Hancock Co., IL], ca. late 1842; unidentified handwriting; twenty pages; JS Collection, CHL.
I know I am a careless man indeed
But I for tatling no Excuse do plead
One thing I say the word we have is <good>
Let this by all the saints be understood
6 What does the Lord O friends of us require
It is for us two houses to prepare
But not to lie and cheat and meanly <-[act>
These things of God Supreme will not be <-[bact>
O may the Lord in mercy on us look
And give us powr all Evils low to brook
Our prophet tries to do the best he can
What more can we Expect from any man
7 Saints should not seek for tatlers part <-[to tell>
But on some better subject learn to dwell
O may we from this day O friends reform
That we may Ever scape The gathering storm
We must be men and Justly deal with <-[all>
Or we below the point will surely fall
When neighbours as their neighbours <disappoint>
Then is the time that things are out of <joint>
8 The word within our shop is current now
If heavy weight and power we all allow
This word should on occasions right be <used>
And not at times improper be abusd
It should be used when tatlers present <are>
When They on men upright do har[s]hly bear
O let this word by all be understood
Dont talk to me when aimd at nothing <good> [p. [4]]
