A Nauvoo city ordinance required the city auctioneer to turn over to the city treasurer the duties he received for sales made at auction. Warner presumably gave this report of auction sales to William Clayton, the treasurer, who subsequently recorded in the treasury ledger the duty owed by Warner. (Ordinance, 12 July 1842–A, sec. 7; Nauvoo City Treasury Ledger, 6, 93.)
