Johnstone (Johnston), Edward
Biography
4 July 1815–17 May 1891. Lawyer, politician, judge, banker. Born in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. Son of Alexander Johnston(e) and Elizabeth Freame. Studied law and admitted to bar, 1837. Moved to Mineral Point, Iowa Co., Wisconsin Territory, 1837; to Burlington, Des Moines Co., Iowa Territory, by 1838; and to Montrose, Lee Co., Iowa Territory, 1838. One of three commissioners who determined title to lands in “Half-Breed Tract.” Moved to Fort Madison, Des Moines Co., Jan. 1839. Elected to Iowa territorial legislature and served as Speaker of the House, 1839. Councilman for Lee Co., 1840. Appointed as U.S. attorney for judicial district of Iowa Territory, ca. 1845. Elected as mayor of Fort Madison, 1849. Married Elizabeth V. Richards, Apr. 1849, in St. Louis. Judge in Lee Co., 1851–1855. Delegate to Iowa constitutional convention, 1857. Moved to Keokuk, Lee Co., by 1866. First president of Keokuk Savings Bank, 1867. Died in Keokuk.
