Maxwell, James
Biography
ca. 1789–5 Jan. 1853. Millwright, machinist, inventor, public reform advocate. Born in Ireland. Married Margaret Dunlap, by Aug. 1821. Immigrated to U.S., Aug. 1821. Invented “Maxwell’s Proof Press,” by Mar. 1838. Elected as member of interim central committee of National Reform Association, 28 Mar. 1844. Died in New York City.
