City on western bank of Mobile River near entrance to Mobile Bay, thirty miles north of Gulf of Mexico. Surrendered by Spain to U.S., 1813. Chartered as town, 1814. Incorporated as city, 1819. County seat. Population in 1840 about 12,700. Population in 1850 about 20,500. Important center of commerce for Gulf Coast.
