Morley Settlement, Illinois

Summary

Also called Yelrome and Morley Town. Area in southwest corner of county, on the Hancock-Adams county line. Settled by refugee Saints from Missouri, spring 1839. Formally laid out by county surveyor on forty-nine acres, 26–28 Mar. 1844. At least seventy Latter-day Saint families eventually occupied settlement. Multipurpose meetinghouse completed in area, by 1842. JS visited and preached in settlement, 13–14 May 1843. Mobs destroyed settlement and expelled residents, fall 1845.
