Summary
One of original thirteen states that formed U.S. Settled at Providence by Roger Williams, 1636. Charter originally granted by Charles II, 1663. Admitted as thirteenth state, 1790. Population in 1830 about 97,000. Population in 1840 about 109,000. Home to first cotton mill in U.S. Orson Hyde and Samuel H. Smith preached gospel and baptized individuals in state, 1832.
