Capias ad satisfaciendum

Summary

Latin for “that you take until satisfaction”; a writ of to arrest a defendant until his or her personal appearance in court on the return day to satisfy a judgment in a personal action for the recovery of money. The defendant, in turn, may give security for payment of the debt or a promise to return into custody again before the return day. Plaintiffs are also subject to this process upon a judgment against them for costs. Abbreviated “ca. sa.”
