was summoned to answer James Gray of a plea that he render to him the sum of two thousand dollars which to him he owes & from him unjustly detains; and thereupon the said Gray complains: For that whereas heretofore to wit on the ninth day of March AD 1837 <​at​> the aforesaid the made his certain writing obligatory sealed with his seal and now to the court here shown, the date whereof is the day & year aforesaid and then & there & thereby acknowledged himself to be in debted held and firmly bound to the plaintiff in the penal sum of two thousand dollars lawful money of of the , to the payment of which sum to the plaintiff the by said writing obligatory bound himself, his heirs, executors and administrators

To which said writing obligatory was subjoined a condition <​in substance​> as follows: That if the above bounden , his heirs executors or Administrators do & shall well & truly pay or cause to be paid to the above named James Gray, his executors administrators or assigns the sum of one thousand dollars good & lawful money of the in the following <​manner​> viz Five hundred dollars by the first day of March one thousand eight hundred & thirty eight and five hundred dollars by the first day of March one thousand eight hundred and forty one, with twelve per cent interest [p.
