JS, Discourse, [, Hancock Co., IL, 10 Mar. 1844]. Featured version inscribed [ca. 10 Mar. 1844] in Historian’s Office, Journal, vol. 1, 11 Feb. 1844–5 Aug. 1845, p. 5; handwriting of ; CHL.
Notebook measuring 8¾ × 4¼ × ¼ inches (22 × 11 × 1 cm) and containing thirty-two leaves. The notebook was labeled on the front cover as “Journal from Feb 11 44 till Aug 5 46 also accounts.” primarily used the notebook as a journal, which fills most of the volume. Beginning on the third page of the notebook, Bullock inscribed journal entries dated between 11 February 1844 and 5 August 1845. At an unknown time, Bullock turned the book upside down and inscribed financial accounts spanning from 9 December 1844 to 30 August 1845 on pages 52−62.
The notebook was docketed by , who served as JS’s scribe from 1843 to 1844 and as clerk to the church historian and recorder from 1845 to 1865. At some point, Bullock's notebook was included in a collection of journals kept by the Church Historian’s Office (now CHL). The document’s early docket, Bullock’s employment with the Church Historian’s Office, and the notebook’s later inclusion in the Historian’s Office journals suggest continuous institutional custody.

Joseph spoke on the Spirit of Elias— the Spirit of Elijah and the Spirit of Messiah— the Spirit of Elias is a forerunner same as John the Baptist— the Spirit of Elijah is the power— to seal the hearts of the Fathers to the children— and the children to the Parents— as Paul declared that the Saints of the last days could not be perfect without them— neither can they be perfect without us— the Spirit of Messiah is all power in Heaven and in Earth— Enthroned in the Heavens as King of Kings and Lord of Lords—
the Rainbow is a sign for seed time and harvest when the Rainbow is not to be seen— it is a sign of the commencement of famine— & pestilence &c &c and that the coming of the Messiah is not far distant the Messiah will not come this year— upsets Millerites the Messiah will not come for 40 years— and he told the people to write it— a very large & attentive congregation— [p.
