and served as agents for the church in , Illinois, in 1840 and 1841. Bent joined the church in in 1833, while Harris joined in in 1834. Both men moved to by 1836 and relocated to Commerce (later Nauvoo), Illinois, by October 1839. Both were appointed to the Nauvoo high council on 5 October 1839. On 17 July 1840, Bent and Harris were nominated by JS and approved by the high council to serve a mission to collect money to allow the church to print a new edition of the Book of Mormon along with other books, such as a new hymnal and JS’s revision of the Bible. Bent and Harris traveled through , Indiana, and , trying to gather the needed funds from church members through subscriptions. These subscriptions included a promise to receive a Book of Mormon in return for the money paid. While many Latter-day Saints were interested, the Saints in some areas lacked the means to subscribe. On 8 September 1840, Bent and Harris met with in , Ohio, and gave him forty dollars as well as promissory notes amounting to eighty-three dollars, all of which they had collected for printing the Book of Mormon. Later that month, Bent and Harris signed an agreement, as agents of the church, to help Robinson and , his partner in the Nauvoo printing office, pay the printing expenses for the Book of Mormon. Bent and Harris continued gathering funds in 1840 and into 1841, traveling throughout , , , and . By spring 1841, copies of the newly printed Book of Mormon began to be given to those who had subscribed for the printing expenses. In April 1841, Hannah Potter wrote that she had received “one Book of Mormon,” which satisfied her subscription to Bent and Harris. Several of the receipts and subscription lists created by Bent and Harris as agents for the church are extant and included here.
