“Mr. Fare Play,” Poem, to JS, [, Hancock Co., IL], ca. late 1842; unidentified handwriting; twenty pages; JS Collection, CHL.
And let us ev’ry practice vile forsake
That God may through his prophet true unfo<ld>
What has to man on Earth been never told
That misteries true to us may be reveald
Which was in by gone days from man <conceald>
O let us seek the Lord with single eye
And never more believe a tatling lie
(And of the tatlers vile be ever shy)
5 Those who have oft against our prophet <spake>
I wish they might like Beltesharis shake
(Until of them of tatling vile doth break)
Such tatlers vile should all in hastness <end>
But if they dont when will such ones be sent
O tatlers vile what are you all about
You’d better stop and take a differnt rout
You cant the wrath of God all wise escape
If ye were turned into a tiger’s shape
6 But if you wish to tell your tatling tales
O knaves consign them to the prairie gales
And send them where the words do harshly <tread>
Where not an hones[t] word by men is said
But ceace in fair your lies to tell
And let the saints in peace together dwell
O tatlers vile if you have lies to tell
To hear Them all do not the saints comp<ell>
7 O praise the Lord ye saints of latter days
And up to him in faith your voices raise
But verging to the point we turn again [p. [18]]
