Biography

5 Nov. 1813–24 Feb. 1879. Lumber dealer, real estate broker, housing contractor, railroad director, prison warden. Born at St. Charles Co., Missouri. Son of Richard Berry Pittman and Lucinda Hutchings. Adhered to Quaker faith. Moved to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, 1835. Served as constable, 1842, at Quincy. With Edward Ford and Thomas King, attempted to arrest JS for complicity in attempt to kill former Missouri governor Lilburn W. Boggs, 8 Aug. 1842, at Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois. Served as sheriff, 1844–1848, at Adams Co. Married Mary McDade, 11 Sept. 1845, at Adams Co. Represented Adams Co. in state legislature, 1851–1854. Moved to Santa Clara Co., California, by 1879. Died at Santa Clara Co.
