Biography

7 June 1794–3 Feb. 1869. Farmer. Born at Killingworth, Middlesex Co., Connecticut. Son of Gideon Carter and Johanna Sims. Moved to Benson, Rutland Co., Vermont, by 1810. Married Lydia Kenyon, 2 Dec. 1818, at Benson. Moved to Amherst, Lorain Co., Ohio, by 1830. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Feb. 1831. Ordained an elder. Ordained a high priest by Lyman Wight, 4 June 1831. Appointed to serve mission to Missouri with Solomon Hancock, June 1831. President of branch at Big Blue River, Kaw Township, Jackson Co., Missouri, 1833. Member of Zion high council in Clay Co., Missouri, 1834, and in Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, 1837. Expelled from Missouri, 1838. Located at Lee Co., Iowa Territory, by 1840. Served mission to England, 1846–1849. Arrived at Salt Lake Valley, 1849. Moved to Brigham City, Box Elder Co., Utah Territory, by 1860. Died at Brigham City.
