14 Dec. 1808–11 Feb. 1892. Printer, newspaper and magazine editor and publisher, poet, author, horticulturist. Born in Belmont Co., Ohio. Son of Jacob Gregg and Mary Sinclair. Founded, edited, and published monthly magazine Literary Cabinet and Western Olive Branch, at St. Clairsville, Belmont Co., 1833. Moved to Hancock Co., Illinois, 1836. Printed Carthagenian, first newspaper in Hancock Co., summer 1836. Married Sarah D. Lawton, 10 Nov. 1836, in Carthage, Hancock Co. Published newspaper Western Adventurer, 1837, in Fort Des Moines, Lee Co., Wisconsin Territory (later Montrose, Lee Co., Iowa). Published Warsaw Message, 1842–1844, in Warsaw, Hancock Co. Published Plymouth Locomotive, 1857, at Plymouth, Hancock Co. Authored Fruit Culture for the Million: A Hand-book of Fruit Culture, 1857. Chair of Republican Committee of Carthage, beginning Mar. 1858. Settled on fruit farm in Hamilton, Hancock Co., 1858. Published Hamilton Representative, 1858, at Hamilton. Secretary of Hancock Co. Pioneers’ Association and of Warsaw Horticultural Society, ca. 1869. Published Gregg’s Dollar Monthly and Older Settlers’ Memorial, May 1873–Apr. 1877. Authored History of Hancock County, Illinois, 1880, and The Prophet of Palmyra, 1890. Died at Hamilton.
