Fort Madison, Iowa Territory

Summary

Fort established in area, fall 1808. Fort evacuated and torched, 3 Sept. 1813, to prevent capture by Indians. Area settled, 1832, and surveyed, June 1835. Significant center of trade, manufacturing, and shipping on Mississippi River. Established as Lee Co. seat of justice, 1838. Incorporated as town, 19 Jan. 1838. Population in 1838 about 600; in 1846 about 1,600; and in 1850 about 2,300. Iowa Territory penitentiary completed in town, 1841. Maid of Iowa, carrying JS and others, docked at town, 9 May 1843.
