Presidency
On 5 October 1839, a general conference of the church
appointed as president of the Iowa
branch. On 19 October 1839,
and were appointed as Smith’s counselors. At a meeting held on 24
April 1841, and were appointed as
Smith’s counselors, replacing Cahoon and Wight. Smith, Pettegrew, and
Nickerson acted as the presidency of the church in Iowa for the rest of
the period between April and November 1841.

High Council
On 5 October 1839, a general conference of the church
appointed twelve men to serve as a in . On 24 April 1841,
, , and replaced
council members , , and , respectively. The minutes for a
conference held 7 August 1841 suggest that there were only nine members
of the high council when the conference began. It is uncertain which
three men were no longer members of the council, but , , and were appointed at that conference to fill the vacancies
on the council.

Bishopric

over the Iowa branch on 12 July 1840. By 19 December 1840, and
had been appointed as counselors to Smith. They continued to function in these positions
throughout 1841.
