20th Thursday met as before. Before Day Gen Smith and staff and went out on the prairie to view the situation of the ground for a battle, and reconoitered the country and laid out the manner of entrenching the if it should be necessary. He also made arrangements to procure provisions for the inhabitants of the upon which a large ammount of provision were obtained. To day about 40 muskets landed in the as by accident and was purchased by order of Genl Smith by the Marshall
This evening enquired of Genl Smith if he should rent a building and sit some men to repairing the small arms which was out of order to which he replied never mind now leaving off what I told you to do for I tell you in confidence there will not be a gun fired on our part at this time &c.
He then advised to go to & he would send his family on the first boat. but said Joseph I cant leave you whereupon Joseph said to the Company I wish I could get out of the way to save him. and I would stay with you and see it out.
Late this evening Joseph gave & orders to go to all the stores in the & get all the powder in his name that was to be had which was done
Friday 21st Legion paraded as before, Orders came from the to Genl Smith requesting him to let men pass & repass in the without inquiring into their business which was granted. Gen Smith went on the prairie and located a place for encampment and met a messenger with a letter as before. He further instructed his agents to pledge his farms and other property for provisions for the people [p. [2]]
